History

New Jersey’s Most Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services

Open since 1974, the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) is a major component of JFK Health – one of the most comprehensive health care networks in New Jersey. JFK Johnson is the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Our mission is simple: to provide quality rehabilitation that will assist adults and children living with disabilities to obtain optimal function and independence within an accepting community. Our continuum of care assures patients of an integrated, personalized program that facilitates the recovery process and encourages family participation.

Programs and Services

For nearly 50 years, JFK Johnson has developed programs in such specialties as stroke rehabilitation, orthopaedic programs, fitness, cardiac rehabilitation, women’s health, pediatrics and brain injury rehabilitation.

In addition to providing inpatient adult rehabilitation services, we treat thousands of children and adults each year on an outpatient and short-term basis. Outpatient rehabilitation programs are provided in Edison and at our facilities in Metuchen, Monroe and Piscataway. Affiliated with JRI is the Shore Rehabilitation Institute, a 40-bed inpatient and outpatient comprehensive rehabilitation hospital located in Brick, NJ.  We also provide a variety of consulting, treatment, education, and advocacy for local companies, professionals and schools.

JFK Johnson offers 94 inpatient beds in a separately licensed hospital that is attached to JFK Medical Center. Together, they comprise JFK Medical Center, a renowned not-for-profit community hospital.

Accreditation

The Johnson Rehabilitation Institute is accredited by both the Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Adult Program, Inpatient Rehabilitation Adult Brain Injury Specialty Program, Stroke Specialty Program, Interdisciplinary Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Adult Brain Injury Specialty Program, and Comprehensive Vocational Evaluation Services. JRI is also licensed by the state of New Jersey as a Comprehensive Rehabilitation Hospital.

JFK Johnson offers patients access to JFK’s acute hospital services, emergency care, subacute and long-term care facilities, maternity care and pediatric services as well as the Neuroscience Institute at JFK.
