FAQ’s
What are the first signs of hearing loss?
Difficulty hearing in various listening situations is an early sign. Tinnitus — a ringing or high-pitched buzzing or whining in one or both ears — can also be the first sign for many people. As hearing loss progresses, individuals may have difficulty hearing in challenging situations, such as a crowded restaurant or at a party. Additionally, a family member or friend may notice that the person is asking to have statements repeated, or is missing what is being said in a conversation.
If I think I am having a hearing problem what should I do?
Hearing loss is first and foremost a medical condition, therefore a visit to your primary care physician to assess whether there are any underlying medical conditions that require treatment is the first step. Once this is completed then a referral to an audiologist for a comprehensive audiology evaluation should be the next step.
What is involved in an audiology evaluation?
We start with a detailed history covering overall health, and issues affecting the ears. We then get an understanding of your lifestyle, to understand how hearing loss is impact your life. Once this is completed we assess the your ability to hear tones of different frequencies, your ability to understand words as well as the function of your middle ear. This testing allows us to determine the degree of your hearing loss as well as what part of the ear is affected.
How long does an evaluation take?
The test typically take 30 to 40 minutes.
What type of treatment is available if I have hearing loss?
Provided your physician has ruled out any underlying medical condition causing the hearing loss treatment may include regular monitoring of the hearing, amplification, assistive listening technology or auditory training to teach the brain how to listen better.
How will wearing a hearing aid help me?
The evidence is overwhelming in that treating hearing loss can improve your quality of life, including: relationships at home, your self-esteem, improved mental health, increased self-confidence, and a better sense of safety and independence.
If a hearing aid is recommended how do I know what hearing aid is best for me?
Today there are many different types and styles of hearing aids available. The one that is best for you will depend on many factors. The amount of hearing loss you have, and the listening situations you are in on a daily basis as well as your lifestyle will help us decide which device is best for you. Exploring these factors with a licensed audiologist will assist you in selecting the most appropriate hearing aids.
Testimonials
“When my son was 17 months old, he got his first hearing aid. His hearing would fluctuate, so we had to go back regularly for adjustments to the hearing aids and further testing. Everyone in the department knows us, and they’ve always been incredibly accommodating and warm”
“When I discovered I had hearing loss I wanted to be evaluated at a hospital. I believed the staff there would be more patient-oriented than people working in a commercial setting, and I knew that JFK Medical Center had a well-regarded audiology program; that was thirty years ago and over three decades the staff shows the same commitment, skill, and compassion that was evident at our first meeting,”
“Recently I was experiencing sudden trouble with my hearing aids. I thought for sure I was going to have to wait several days in order to get my hearing aids checked out as that was my experience from a previous place that I had purchased my hearing aids from. When I called the JFK Audiology Department not only were they were able to get me an appointment that same day but I was provided with a loaner hearing aid while my own hearing aid was sent out for repair. I am so happy I found them.”

“From the receptionist to the audiologist , the staff was probably the most pleasant people I have encountered in a long time. The audiologist had a terrific bedside manner and made my daughter and me so comfortable.”
