Phrenic nerve injury, a rare condition that affects breathing, can impact the ability to perform daily and recreational activities. The use of nerve conduction studies, in combination with physical therapy evaluation and interventions, allows patients to get properly diagnosed and receive possible surgical intervention, which can result in significant improvement in breathing and quality of life.

What is the benefit of being in a comprehensive rehabilitation center?
Our physicians and therapists work together and treat a wide range of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons. They are experts in evaluating and treating injuries, illnesses, and disabilities to maximize function and quality of life.
What is electrodiagnostics?
Electrodiagnositics are techniques used to test the function of muscles and nerves. The most common test uses are electromyography (EMG) which tests the muscles and nerve conduction studies which tests the nerves. The studies help determine the cause of pain, numbness and tingling, and strength loss. It also helps determine if other conditions are occurring.
What does an EMG test involve?
EMG is performed by placing small needles in the muscles to directly evaluate the electrical activity caused by a muscle contraction. It allows the physician to evaluate how well muscles are working and can help determine if the muscles are receiving the proper signal from nerves.
What does a nerve conduction study involve?
Sensors over the nerve in the arms and legs are stimulated with small electric sensations. Through this test the doctor is able to see how fast or slow nerves are functioning.
