Our comprehensive therapy programs include interaction with patients, families, caregivers as well as other healthcare professionals to provide optimal care.
What is a Physical Therapist?
A Physical Therapist (PT) is a licensed, highly educated health care professional who examines, evaluates and treat individuals who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that may limit their abilities to function and participate in their daily lives. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability. In addition, PTs develop wellness programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

- The Aquatic Therapy program available at the Outpatient Center at Metuchen, uses the unique components of water to assist with the healing process. The buoyancy of the water allows you to exercise with less stress on an injured area and less fear of falling. Individualized aquatic exercise programs using underwater equipment are provided to include functional training activities, endurance training, balance, and gait training,
- A maintenance program for a monthly fee after finishing the therapy program is also available.
- Pelvic Floor Muscle Rehabilitation
- Common conditions such as urinary and fecal incontinence, constipation, overactive bladder syndrome, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction are addressed in JFK JRI’s Pelvic Floor program. Available at the Outpatient Physical Therapy Centers in Edison and Monroe, our PT specialists in pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation are able to examine, evaluate and treat conditions due to pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions. Treatment may include exercises for strengthening, flexibility and co-ordination, relaxation and breathing instruction, postural re-education, biodfeedback and electrical stimulation, soft tissue mobilization, trigger point release and education. All sessions are conducted by a physical therapist in a private and comfortable treatment setting.
- Lymphedema Management
Lymphedema, a swelling of body part due to an accumulation of protein-rich fluid, most often occur in the extremities, but can also occur in the face, the trunk, the abdomen or the genital area. It can be caused by congenital malformations of the lymphatic system or as a result of surgery or radiation therapy for cancer. Available in Outpatient Physical Therapy and Occupational in Edison, our Certified Lymphedema Therapists are specially trained in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a gold standard of lymphedema management. The goal is to reduce the swelling and maintain the reduction. The program consists of gentle manual therapy techniques, compression therapy, exercises, skin care, and education.
Scope of Services: Spinal Cord Injury Program in Outpatient Rehabilitation
The Spinal Cord Injury Program in Outpatient Rehabilitation serves adult and adolescents after a spinal cord injury. We accept patient with injuries below the level of C5 and the injury can be complete or incomplete.
Outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy services are provided directly to the spinal cord patient population Monday through Friday. Occupational Therapy services are provided from 730 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday and Physical Therapy Services are provided from 730am – 8pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:30-5pm on Friday. Patients are seen two to three times a week depending on individual patient needs.
Patients in this program are referred from hospital and physician providers throughout the following areas: HMH network; local, regional, statewide, national, and international facilities. Payers include both government sponsored (Medicare, Medicaid), as well as third party payers, including commercial insurances, workers’ compensation, motor vehicle insurance, and private/self pay. All insurances are verified for coverage prior to the initiation of services. Fees for services can be obtained through the Outpatient Rehabiltation department.
All services are provided directly at the HMH Johnson Rehabilitation Institute.
