Institutions and Program Description

The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute offers a two-year Post-Doctoral Residency in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation with a concentration in the assessment and rehabilitation of adults with acquired neurologic illness, including traumatic brain injury, stroke and cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, and dementia.  The residency is conducted in conjunction with New Jersey Neuroscience Institute. Adult Neuropsychology (NMS Program Code # 9951): openings every other year

This position offers a concentration in neuropsychological consultation and evaluation of patients seen through the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute as well as the Department of Neurology at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, which provide extensive clinical programs for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex neurological diseases. Patients are also seen through community neurology and neurosurgical services, including stroke syndromes, movement disorders, brain tumors, epilepsy, memory disorders and dementia. Residents may participate in periodic special procedures (i.e., Wada and mapping) as part of comprehensive pre-surgical epilepsy work-ups, or pre-surgical (DBS) evaluations of patients with movement disorders.

Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (Adult) (NSM Program Code # 9952): openings every year

1 OPENING FOR 2021-2023

The first year of the residency includes neuropsychological evaluation of patients on an in-patient brain trauma unit and out-patient neuropsychological evaluations. The in-patient component provides specialized training in the evaluation of patients with severe brain injury, including assessment of post-coma and related disorders of consciousness. The Resident will typically spend 1 to 2 days per week on the Brain Trauma Unit, which is the primary in-patient for patients with traumatic brain injury and stroke. Neuropsychological consultation and evaluation is also provided to patients on the Extended Recovery Unit, which provides continued care for medically stable patients with persistent cognitive and physical limitations. During this rotation, the Resident will provide neuropsychological consultation to JFK Medical Center, which allows exposure to patients with diverse forms of neurologic disease (including stroke syndromes, movement disorders, memory disorders and dementia) and general rehabilitation patients The Resident will also conduct neuropsychological evaluations on an out-patient basis for patients with a wide variety of neurologic conditions.

The second year of residency is spent working in a comprehensive, post-acute, neuro-rehabilitation program with specialized training in comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, interdisciplinary treatment planning, intensive cognitive rehabilitation, and mild traumatic brain injury. An emphasis of this portion of the residency is the ability to manage an integrated program of cognitive, physical and psychosocial rehabilitation therapies for persons with acquired brain injury.

Educational opportunities are offered through individual and group supervision; neuropsychology rounds, and neurology rounds. Additional educational opportunities are available through attendance at   neuropathology and neuroimaging rounds, basic neuroscience and clinical neurology lectures, and support for continuing education. Network PC’s with Internet access are also provided to the resident in the neuropsychology offices.

Residents are expected to participate in research and demonstrate scholarship consistent with a scientist-practitioner model of training in neuropsychology. Proficiency in clinical research may be demonstrated, for example, through participation in ongoing research, preparation of a comprehensive written review in a relevant topic area of neuropsychology, or presentation of a written case study with supporting literature.

The goal of educating and training the competencies necessary for the specialized practice of clinical neuropsychology are outlined in the Competency Evaluation Form.  The emphasis of training opportunities involve primarily adults and are strong in the areas of neuropsychological rehabilitation, neuropsychological evaluation, neuropsychological consultation and moderate in the areas of forensics, psychotherapy, supervision by residents of other providers.  Availability of patient populations is strong in the areas of brain injury, stroke; moderate for dementia, epilepsy, brain tumors, geriatric conditions, and general neurology and rehabilitation populations.

The program administrative structure is headed by Yelena Goldin, Ph.D., ABPP-CN Director of Training.  Dr. Goldin provides supervision of out-patient evaluations, and assists with supervision of treatment activities during the second year of the residency. Direct supervision during the first year in-patient rotation is also provided by Sara Michaud, Ph.D., and ABPP-CN, Georgianna Dart, Psy.D. Tasha Mott, Ph.D. provides additional supervision for out-patient evaluations and supervises treatment during the second year of the Neuropsychological Rehabilitation residency. Supervision may also be provided by other staff neuropsychologists based on their area of expertise. All supervisors are licensed to practice psychology in New Jersey and are Fellowship-trained, experienced neuropsychologists.
